Skills Gap Reporting
See which learning goals and performance metrics your team is weakest at, so you know where coaching will do the most good.
Reports already tells you what your learners are doing. Skills Gap tells you where the improvement opportunities are.
Instead of an overall average, Skills Gap ranks each individual goal by how well your team actually performs it. A team can hold a respectable overall score while consistently missing one specific goal - that goal is what you want to coach, and an average will never show it to you.
Where to Find It
Skills Gap appears in three places in Reports:
- Account-wide. A Skills Gap tab beside Environments and Learners ranks your standardized performance metrics across the account.
- On each environment. Environment detail is now organized into tabs: Learners, Skills Gap, Performance, Analytics, and Distribution. Skills Gap opens first. The learners table you're used to is on the Learners tab.
- On each learner. Learner detail has its own Skills Gap tab. Environment Library has moved into a tab there too, alongside Performance Overview, Environment Breakdown, and Goal Analysis.
What You Get
- Goal achievement, per environment. Every graded goal in an environment, ranked lowest achievement first, with the Met / Partial / Not Met split and the number of learners and sessions behind each row.
- Performance metric achievement, account-wide. Your standardized performance metrics ranked the same way. Open any metric to compare it by environment or by learner, lowest first. Each environment row also names that environment's weakest graded goal, and selecting it opens the environment's Skills Gap tab. Long lists show the lowest ten, with Show more and Show all.
- Metrics in context. On an environment, each performance metric shows the environment's figure beside the account's, for example "29% here, 38% across the account". Metrics that only some environments use are listed separately and compared only across those environments.
- Goal achievement, per learner. A learner's Skills Gap tab shows their goals at their best attempt and their performance metrics, each beside the group's figure - so you can tell an individual who is behind the team from a goal the whole team is behind on. The goals they met are listed with the rarest in the group first, since meeting a goal most of the group misses is the strength worth naming.
- Strengths alongside the gaps. The goals your team meets most often, so you can see what's working and protect it.
- Retired goals keep their history. If an author rewords or removes a goal after learners were graded on it, the goal stays in the ranking, marked "No longer in this environment".
- Your existing filters. Skills Gap follows the date range and learner filters you're already using, and recalculates over whatever you've filtered to.
How to Read an Achievement Score
Every session is graded against each learning goal as Met, Partial, or Not Met, and each learner is counted once at their best attempt:
- Met - achieved on the learner's best attempt. Full credit.
- Partial - shown even at their best, but not fully. Half credit.
- Not Met - not achieved on any attempt. No credit.
Achievement rolls those into one number, counting Met in full and Partial as half. A goal where 33% of learners met it and 46% partially met it scores 33 plus half of 46, so 56%. Higher is better, and the lowest rows are where coaching helps most.
The percentages on a row are shares of learners and add up to 100%. They're rounded to whole percent, so adding them up by hand can land a point either side of the achievement shown.
A collapsed How to read a row explainer above each goal table walks through a worked example.
Two Goals Can Share a Score and Need Opposite Responses
Because Partial counts half, very different groups can land on the same achievement. The split on each row is how you tell them apart.
- Met 10%, Partial 80%, Not Met 10% - achievement 50%, and almost the whole group is half way there. Learners are attempting the goal and falling just short, so it responds to reinforcement.
- Met 50%, Partial 0%, Not Met 50% - also achievement 50%, but for half these learners the goal isn't landing at all. That's a re-teaching signal rather than a nudge.
A goal sitting mid-table on a pile of half credit is easy to walk past, so the goal carrying the most Partial is marked in the ranking.
Goals Use Best Attempt, Metrics Use Typical Performance
This is deliberate, and it's why a goal's achievement here won't match the Goal Analysis tab or the learner's LMS score. Goal Analysis reports how many goals were completed per session; Skills Gap counts each learner once per goal at their best attempt, with partial credit. The two answer different questions rather than disagreeing, and each tab states its basis.
- Goals are scored on each learner's best attempt. Learners retry until they pass, so the question worth asking is "have they ever shown they can do this?" A goal is only a real gap if the learner's best attempt still fell short.
- Performance metrics are scored on each learner's typical performance. Metrics are scored on every session in every scenario, so a best-attempt view would make almost everyone look perfect. The question here is "do they do it consistently?"
Goals are also scenario-specific - the same goal name in two environments is two different skills, so they're never merged. Performance metrics mean the same thing everywhere, which is why they're reported account-wide.
When There Isn't Enough Data
A goal or metric needs at least 5 learners before it's ranked. Below that, Skills Gap says so and suggests how to get a result instead of showing a ranking built on two people: widen the date range (one click takes a 7- or 30-day range to the last 90 days), include more learners, or wait for more of your team to practice. Expect this on small or newly launched environments, or under a narrow filter.
Who Can See It
Skills Gap follows your existing Reports access. You see it only for the environments and learners your report access already covers, and the account-wide breakdown by learner needs full report access. If you don't see Reports at all, ask your Rehearsal admin for access.
