Supported Languages in Roleplay
See which languages Roleplay supports, and the difference between the interface language and the AI Persona's conversation language.
Roleplay has two separate language settings that are easy to confuse because they draw from the same list of languages:
- UI language - the language the Roleplay interface itself is displayed in (menus, buttons, labels, instructions).
- AI Persona language - the language an Environment's AI character speaks, and the language its feedback, grading, and session analysis are delivered in.
These are set independently, in different places, for different reasons. A learner can view the Roleplay interface in Spanish while practicing an Environment where the AI Persona speaks French - the two settings don't need to match.
The Supported Languages
Both the UI and the AI Persona draw from the same 14-language list:
- English
- Chinese (中文)
- Dutch (Nederlands)
- French (Français)
- German (Deutsch)
- Hungarian (Magyar)
- Italian (Italiano)
- Japanese (日本語)
- Korean (한국어)
- Polish (Polski)
- Portuguese (Português)
- Russian (Русский)
- Spanish (Español)
- Swedish (Svenska)
Being on this list means both uses are covered - if a language isn't here, it's not available as either a UI language or an AI Persona conversation language.
UI Language
The UI language controls how the Roleplay interface itself reads - not what any AI character says. It follows your language preference set at the Rehearsal account level, not a setting inside Roleplay. If you need it changed, check your Rehearsal profile settings or ask your administrator.
AI Persona Language
The AI Persona language controls the actual practice conversation: what the AI character says and hears, and the language used for real-time feedback, post-session grading, and performance analysis.
- Set per Environment, in Conversation Settings → Language, by whoever authors the Environment.
- Each Environment is authored in one language. To offer the same scenario in multiple languages, create a separate Environment per language rather than switching one Environment's language back and forth.
- Environments created before this setting existed default to English and continue to work without any changes needed.
Why the Two Don't Have to Match
It's easy to assume the interface and the conversation should be in the same language, but they answer different questions:
- UI language answers "what language do I navigate Roleplay in?"
- AI Persona language answers "what language is this specific practice scenario conducted in?"
A German-speaking manager, for example, might navigate Roleplay in German while assigning a learner an English-language sales scenario built for a US audience. Both settings are doing their job correctly at the same time.
