Blurring Your Background

Turn on background blur before a Roleplay session if you'd rather not have the room behind you on camera.

Roleplay sessions record you on camera, and those recordings can be reviewed later. If you're practicing from home, a shared desk, or an open office, you can blur what's behind you.

Select Blur background on the camera preview before the session starts. It's off by default. Turn it on, check yourself in the preview, and begin the session. The same choice is also in Audio & Video Settings, and the two always match.

Worth Knowing

  • Blur applies to the recording, not just your own preview, so it carries through to your session history, Reports, Replay, and MP4 export - everywhere your session is reviewed.
  • We remember your choice. It's saved to your account, so it follows you to your next session, in any environment, on any device. Someone else signing in on the same computer starts with their own setting.
  • Set it before you start. Blur can't be turned on or off once the session has begun, so make the call at the preview.
  • On a slower computer, blur adjusts rather than switching off. If your computer can't keep up, Roleplay lowers blur quality step by step so your background stays blurred and the session records normally. Your video may look a little softer. If that bothers you, turn blur off for full-quality video.
  • No Blur background button? Your browser can't run it. Blur works on current versions of Chrome, Edge, and Safari. On other browsers the button doesn't appear, and your session works exactly as it always has.
  • "Background blur turned off" means blur couldn't run on your device for that session. The session and recording continue normally without it.
  • Web only. Blur is available in Roleplay in your browser, on desktop and mobile. It isn't in the Rehearsal iOS app.
It's a personal setting. Blur is per learner, not something an administrator turns on or off for a group.
